Conquering the Treadmill, Beginning my Patience
Many probably run mainly for health benefits before anything else. Not me. I run mainly to develop my non existence patience . A virtue that I definitely struggle with!
I have always been on the move kind of person. Not just physically hyper. But more of in the mind.
It wonders. It crawls, it walks and then it runs in vicious circles. My brain never stops. And my incessant mind more often than not can drive me up the wall. The chatter in the head, the ever-increasing to do lists, can you relate to this?
Running helps me to stay focused and gives me the opportunity to manage my mind. Sometimes before the start of my treadmill sessions, excuses will spontaneously spring up. “Hey you were unwell last night, take it easy”, “So much work to finish today, better cut short the run.” The list goes on. Have you ever had that experience?
Or when you are so near to achieving your goal, the devil does its diligent work again. “We are almost there, makes no difference if we finish it or not.”
The more I persist to complete and resist the temptation to give up half way, the easier it gets. It always takes the first step, then the next and the next… With each step, the notion of quitting melts away. Momentum does its magic.
Every time I stepped on the treadmill, the dread lessen and the enthusiasm to conquer it surfaces again. It is such a wonderful feeling.

99% versus 100%

I was reading about how 99% is a bitch and 100% is a breeze. That really made me stop and ponder over it. I admit that sometimes, when the laziness kicks in and you are almost done with something, a voice will tell u,”Look, what difference does it make? You have already covered so much ground. That already means something.” And you succumb to that temptation.
I went for a run yesterday at California Fitness. It has been a while since I resumed running. A sprained ankle can make you shy away from it for a while. Trust me, especially for a dancer, all sorts of paranoid thoughts invade your mind. Because an ankle plays a huge part in a dancer’s life.
So running a 4km on a treadmill was a big deal to me. At 2.4km, the voice starts its automatically devil’s talk. I remembered what I read before I came for the run. I gave in a little bit, I slowed down for a 400m brisk walk and resumed running.
It was awesome to finish the 4km, my goal on the onset. And I felt powerful. Every single time you feel that power, you will be generally a stronger and more resilient person. That is the kind of person I would like to be…
