I sobbed like a baby. When was the last thing I teared so bad watching a movie? I cannot remember. This show is heart wrenching. If you have been going on like a frantic rat on a treadmill, this is just the antidote to stop you on your track and get you straighten up again.

It is a story about the 40 years of romance John had with a most brilliant English novelist, Dame Iris Murdoch. She was a highly spirited individual, passionate and spontaneous about life. She twirled many a men round her fingers. John who eventually won her over was not as spectacular a figure as Iris was. He was not larger than life, just a typical scholar character but who has many loving and gentle ways about him that will grow on you as you watched the movie developed. His charm is of a more subtle sort.

Then the unthinkable happened. Iris started to have difficulty in remember words and in writing. It turns out that her mind was slowly but surely being ravaged by the devastating efforts of Alzheimer. The prolific genius was reduced one totally incapable of speech.

John continued to adore Iris and care for her in the best way that he could. But he himself was not getting young either and have his own getting old symptoms to deal with. The heart just feel deep tugs of pain when I see how both struggled with their own and each other issues. They stayed together. They sticked together. Irregardless.

Brilliant. Brilliant. Brilliant.

Please do yourself a favor and watch this story. It reminded me of what is most important at the end of the day. At the end of my life. Not exactly all my fantastical achievements. It is really who is nearest and dearest to you.

I love this picture I saw on Singapore Tatler Nov 2008. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the most gorgeous thing on this issue.

How bizarre it feels to be writing again. Felt like an ancient time ago since I cracked my brain to string words together to form sentences. Hoping that it will make sense at the end of the day and could perhaps enlighten you or at least amuse you…

Several painful months spent orientating my way through being a student again. And worse, of all options, trying to be a literary student (you think you bery sophicated izzit??!!!). It was after much hesitation (my very pathetic exposure to literature but impossible attraction to it) that I decided to just take a deep breath and plunge into the dark gloomy waters.

It was a glorious time with my nose getting lost among the books written by genius writers from the past (hell time getting hold of these books in Singapore!). Quite a honor really. To have the opportunity to read all these great works. How better to suffer (popular concept: you ah, must suffer lah, or else how to get your degree? No pain no gain you understand girl?!) for my education than to drown myself reading.

Love Program

Having said all that, let me assure you I spend days on end or at least llloooonnnggg moments walking around looking rather dazed and in a world of my own (Hello, Planet Earth calling Joy). I started taking naps too. There is this theory that it’s because the brain needs you to zzzzz so that it can do OT (overtime) to process all information being dumped at it at a rapid rate (I like this theory by the way. Haha). Do you think it’s true?

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed the reading list. I devoured it like a hungry monster. I was more famished for new knowledge (sucker for intellectual stimulation lah) than I had anticipated. However, of course, like everything else in life, there is ALWAYS a downside.

One of the most blatant one is I became physically lazy! Long hours of sitting still (trust me, it was so challenging for me to do so!) to read like a mad woman to finish my reading schedule for the day had made me as lazy as a pig.

To be fair, I was also worried shitless that I could NEVER finish the reading list (I’m still only halfway through!) and whether I could survive the old English nightmare (Eh, what talk you ah?)

Thankfully, now that I have gotten a little bit more used to cramping lots of “chiem” (profound) English into the brain (pet my brain, good job!) and being a little more convinced (perhaps, I can do this after all! oh yeah!), I have come back to meet with the rest of you.

Sadly during my hibernation, the economy had a good time bungee jumping from the Westin Hotel (oh sorry hor, now call Fairmont Hotel). At the risk of getting beaten up by the diligent work force, I cannot resist the pleasure of declaring; no better time to go back to school!

Another downside is that I have become very loooonnnng winded. In vain attempts to show off my new literary vocabulary (like real!) and to explore different ways of conveying the same meaning as I used to, my poor family and friends have suffered greatly at the hands of my reading list.

As a non-Mum, I was nevertheless intrigued by this article. Is favoritism among children a bad thing? What if it is a natural instinct you have as a mum to be drawn to one among the rest? Should you then deliberately suppress that extra dose of affection you have for the kid? Will it end up with a reverse effect on all the kids?

I can appreciate how real this problem must be for some long suffering mothers out there. Indeed, I have never read of any article that addresses this issue. I can only imagine the guilt the mum must have for something if you truly examine it, really quite innocent and natural.

A mum confided in me that she does not have favorites. But if pushed to make a choice, she will decide on the youngest. Simple reason, the youngest still explicitly and specifically ask for her! I guess as humans, we will easily be drawn to someone who yearn for us and desire our presence far more than someone who is rather independent and can do without too much of our help.

This is a hybrid of reality movie and art film to me. It has minimal dialogue and an unspectacular beginning. The movie does not intend to dazzle you with special effects or fanciful tricks. It is more like a “read my body language, feel my anguish” kinda show.

There are three main parts.

Part 1, First being a young and jaded prostitute having sexual intercourse with a customer in his car.

Part 2, Second being the young and nervous cadet’s attempt to lose his virginity in the red light district.

Part 3, And third, the innocent but obedient child of a prostitute being forced to be a part of the bedroom scene by the mother’s customer and alongside with it, the mother’s silent anguish at the situation.

In Part 1, I quickly realized that the actress was my friend, Jeszlene Devon Zhou. We have lost touch for a while but she has always been passionate about acting and I was pleased to see her dreams coming to fruition.

I feel the blow job scene when the customer was still driving was rather hysterical. In real life, wouldn’t that be a serious road hazard to other road drivers and to those inside the vehicle? The jaded prostitute in an interesting twist paid a good looking lad, a busker for a song that never happened in the end.

In Part 2, the cadet was understandably torn apart about wanting to have sex for the first time without appearing to be too zealous about it. The classic young men’s rite of passage. And being impressionable and feeling vulnerable, he very quickly became amorous about the prostitute who made his mission a success.

In Part 3, The young lady found a harmless stalker who was so intrigued with her that he waited outside the hotel room where she was forced to service her mother’s abusive customer. The ironic part was when he eventually ended up having a meal with the mother and daughter only to see a heart wrenching tear jerking scene between the two thanks to the young busker.

The common thread between the three scenes was the conclusion they all shared. Strangers finding solace in each other’s arms or the reconciliation of strained family relations. Plenty of smoking, melancholy thoughts, imagery of sexual acts real or revisited in the mind and jaded bravery in facing reality.

It ended as mundanely as it had started. Still, there were a few moments of gem for me. It is a passable film if you can stand its almost monotonous pace. However, if you enjoy art films or movies where the greatest pleasures are derived from interpreting the nuances of every little details you will find this particular one a delight.

Synchronised Swimming in the Olympics, Truly An Art

I was very smitten by what I saw. The synchronized swimmers competing for their Olympics medals got me glued to the telly. Never a water person, I was nevertheless attracted to their gracefulness in the pool. Great strength and endurance are required in particular to hold and control your muscles and body weight in the water.

Yet, you still never fail to see the straight lines and symmetry all beautifully displayed. Not to mention that superb breath control is critical! These swimmers not only need to be extremely flexible, precise timing is also demanded. Teamwork is paramount and the challenge is heightened because of the watery circumstance.

How on earth do they know when to execute the next move?

Not every movement follows a typical timing and beat. Many a times, a music score might consists of a fanciful or unpredictable rhythm to add variety to the movement.

Although I am aware that underwater sound system is in placed, I am still awed by the fantastic accuracy they have executed. Underwater ballet as it is commonly known as, what a marvelous form of art and the ultimate test on the limits of the physical body.

To be honest, this is not my kind of show. Still, I wanted to bring my sister out for a treat. And she sure had a ball with her latest semi pro camera!

You have to admit that this bunch of youngsters are extremely talented. They are ever so agile and graceful on the skating rink. And me with my sprained ankle simply sink deeper into my seat in despair. ,p

Nevertheless, the lightings were delightful and it’s amazing to hear all the kids singing along to the songs. They actually KNOW the lyrics. Impressive!

I love the Olympics Games. I love its symbolism. Having said all that, too much of anything is never a good thing. If you are a telly channel surfer, you will realized that everywhere you turn, you can never hide from the Olympic fever.

As exciting as this must be for one and all every four years, I feel like I am being forced fed with every damn details about the event whether I like it or not. I hate the fact that I am slowly developing slightly negative feelings for the event.

I think there is a limit to how much you should go on and on about it irregardless if your viewers are happy with saturation. I think moderation is required.

A Mighty Heart: Mariane Pearl (Angelina Jolie)

I finally got hold of this movie and got round to watching it. If you are looking for excitement, this will not be the ideal choice. If you are searching for tension and lots of unspoken (read in between the lines) body language, this might be a good one to catch.

Apparently the movie took a while to become a financial success. Reviews were generally favorable. There were numerous criticisms for casting Angelina Jolie as Mariane due to her skin color. However, I feel the mere fact that she was a personal choice from Mariane Pearl should more than justify the choice.

To give credit to Angelina, she was subsequently nominated for the Best Actress of the Year for three awards; Screen Actors Guild Awards, Golden Satellite Awards, Independent Spirit Awards. That says a lot doesn’t it?

I have enjoyed the movie and I could feel the pain of the wife and the challenges the whole investigation team had to overcome in order to bring the whole case to close.

This is really a tragedy that has happened to a most undeserving individual. We can only hope that his soul is resting in peace and Mariane and child will cherish what is left of their lives.

I like this article on Meghan McCain, John McCain’s daughter’s take on her father and Obama. I don’t claim to be an expert in politics but I can see her point of view and I tend to agree with it.
